Efficient Online Handwritten Chinese Character Recognition System Using X-Y Graphs Decomposition and 2-D Unreplicated Linear Functional Relationship Model

摘要Abstract:

This talk presents novel feature extraction and classification methods for online handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR). The X-graph and Y-graph transformation is proposed for deriving a feature, which shows useful properties such as invariance to different writing styles. Central to the proposed method is the idea of capturing the geometrical and topological information from the trajectory of the handwritten character using the X-graph and the Y-graph. For feature size reduction, the Haar wavelet transformation was applied on the graphs. For classification, the coefficient of determination (R2 p) from the two-dimensional unreplicated linear functional relationship model is proposed as a similarity measure. The proposed methods show strong discrimination power when handling problems related to size, position and slant variation, stroke shape deformation, close resemblance of characters, and non-normalization. The proposed recognition system is applied to a database with 3000 frequently used Chinese characters, yielding a high recognition rate of 97.4% with reduced processing time of 75.31%, 73.05%, 58.27% and 40.69% when compared with recognition systems using the city block distance with deviation (CBDD), the minimum distance (MD), the compound Mahalanobis function (CMF) and the modified quadratic discriminant function (MQDF), respectively. High precision rates were also achieved.

摘要Abstract:

In this talk, I will discuss exact maximum likelihood estimators for the location and scale parameters of the Laplace distribution based on complete and censored data (Type-I and Type-II).  Then, I will develop the exact distribution theory for these MLEs using which exact linear likelihood inference will be developed for the life characteristics of Laplace distribution under censored data. Finally, some examples will be presented to illustrate the theoretical results established.

 摘要Abstract:

Step-stress accelerated life tests (SSALTs) wherein devices are subject to elevated stress levels to induce rapid failures are more efficient and less costly than constant-stress accelerated life tests to collect lifetime information of the devices. In this talk, optimal simple SSALT plan for one-shot devices under exponential distributions is considered.
     The design minimizes the asymptotic variance of the maximum likelihood estimate of the mean lifetime under normal operating conditions in terms of three decision variables, including stress levels, inspection times, and sample allocation. An expectation-maximization algorithm will be presented to find the
maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters and the mean lifetime. A procedure will then be presented to determine the decision variables when a range of stress levels, the experimental termination time and normal operating conditions are given.

摘要Abstract:
In engineering and sciences, the process that a system reduces in performance, reliability or life span of assets gradually and irreversibly is known as a degradation process. Degradation measurements are recorded over time for prognostics and health management purposes. The gamma degradation model has been used to characterize the evolution of degradation measurements. In this talk, I will first provide an introduction to the gamma degradation model. Then, I will introduce a two-phase degradation model and discuss the likelihood and Bayesian inference for this model. The gamma model and the inferential methods are applied to analyze a real data set of light emitting diodes (LEDs). In addition to engineering applications, I will also discuss an application of the gamma degradation model in biopharmaceutical statistics. The gamma degradation model is used for assessing the similarity of two drug dissolution profiles and its merits are discussed.
