1. History of the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics was founded in July of 1958. In 1966, the Department formed two divisions: the Division of Mathematics and the Division of Mathematical Statistics (which was renamed as the Division of Data Science and Mathematical Statistics in 2004).
The Department of Mathematics began as an undergraduate program, and later commenced offering postgraduate programs, first with a masters (MS) program in 1970, and then with a doctor of philosophy (Ph. D.) program in 1990.
In 2009, the Department launched an additional masters program for secondary school teachers: In-Service Advanced Training (MSIAT) program. The MSIAT program provides advanced training for middle school teachers who desire to improve their mathematics knowledge and teaching skills.
The Department currently has 434 undergraduate students, 16 MS students, 17 students in the MSIAT program, and seven Ph. D. students.

Approximately 4,300 students have obtained degrees from the Department since its founding. The Department’s alumni have been successful in securing positions in mathematics-related fields (including the education and business sectors), and in making professional contributions in such fields, both domestically and abroad.

2. Research and Teaching

The Department of Mathematics currently has 25 faculty members, including 13 tenured professors, ten associate professors, and two assistant professors, all of whom have doctoral degrees.
The Department has a distinguished record in research. During the past three years, the faculty members have, on average every year, received 16 research grants from Taiwan’s National Science Council, and published 40 articles in international refereed journals as well as one book.
The research activities of the Department’s faculty members are diverse across the broad spectrum in the areas of mathematics and statistics. Their research interests include areas such as algebra, analysis, algebraic topology, computational mathematics, differential equations, and combinatorics (in mathematics); as well as mathematical statistics, big data, biostatistics, industrial statistics, and statistical computation (in statistics).
In addition, the Department has been publishing the Tamkang Journal of Mathematics, an international mathematics journal, throughout the past four decades. The journal receives manuscripts from all over the world. Its editors and associate editors include renowned scholars in the United States, Canada, and mainland China. The journal participates journal-exchange programs with more than 100 mathematical journals around the world.
While the Department values mathematical and statistical research, it also places an emphasis on teaching. The Department provides undergraduate and graduate students with courses taught by excellent instructors in a variety of areas, from fundamental and general courses in mathematics and statistics, to more advanced and niche topics, as well as related areas of application. Through rigorous mathematics training, the Department provides its students with the tools necessary for logical and analytical thinking, problem-solving, and organizing and expressing complex thoughts.
The distinguishing feature of the Department is its emphasis on the consolidation of theory and application. By utilizing mathematical and statistical software in computer classrooms, students develop a solid understanding in mathematics and statistics through numerical computation, programming and graph visualization. The Department also strengthens students’ abilities in the application of mathematics and statistics principles with the implementation of various practical training courses.

In addition to the utilization of computer software and hardware resources for students, the Department maintains a close partnership with various research institutions with the aim of enhancing students’ learning experience. The Department has had, and continues to maintain, collaborative, productive and amiable working relationships with numerous research organizations (including Academia Sinica), financial institutions (including Fubon Financial Holding Co., Ltd.) and teaching hospitals (including Veterans General Hospital and National Defense Medical Center), which has furthered research priorities and training experiences.
